A New Chapter Begins in Olobelibel

Two years ago, when Power for the People visited the pastoralist Maasai community of Olobelibel in Kajiado County, Kenya, we heard stories that revealed the true cost of water scarcity.

Women described walking long distances across difficult terrain to collect water for their families. Men spoke of losing up to 90% of their cattle during severe droughts, devastating livelihoods built over generations. Water scarcity was affecting every aspect of life, from health and education to household income and community resilience.

Today, that story is beginning to change.

Through a partnership between Power for the People and local implementing partner Enkakenya Sidai Initiative, a new community borehole is now providing a reliable source of water for more than 500 households and the livestock they depend on. Powered by solar energy and designed for long-term sustainability, the borehole is helping to reduce vulnerability to drought while strengthening local resilience.

Yet for us, this milestone is about far more than water.

When we spoke with community members about their hopes for the future, they shared aspirations that extend well beyond access to water. They envisioned stronger women's groups supported through training and revolving loan funds, expanded access to menstrual, sexual, and reproductive health education, adult literacy programmes, stronger local leadership, and new opportunities for enterprise and economic growth.

These aspirations remind us that water is not the destination. It is the foundation.

The opening of the borehole was celebrated by community members, local leaders, partners, and the Governor of Kajiado County. It was a powerful moment that reflected not only what has been achieved, but also what is possible when communities and partners work together.

But our journey in Olobelibel is not complete.

Reliable water has created new opportunities, but turning those opportunities into lasting change will require continued investment, partnership, and collaboration. Together with the community, we are committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen livelihoods, expand educational opportunities, improve health outcomes, and empower women and young people to shape their own future.

We invite donors, development partners, organisations, and individuals who share this vision to join us. By partnering with Power for the People, you can help transform the aspirations of Olobelibel into reality and support a community that is determined to build a stronger, more resilient future.

Because when communities have the tools, resources, and opportunities they need, lasting change becomes possible.
