What Makes Mentorship So Powerful

I am a community worker and the founder of an emerging organization in Gulu Northern Uganda dedicated to helping children especially girls to stay in as well as women and teenage mothers generate income, support their families, and keep their children in school. I mentor young girls and teenage mothers, encouraging them to believe in themselves and build a better future.

A few years ago, however my life looked very different. I was struggling with low self-esteem and uncertainty about my future and financially, life was very difficult as I had no money and often felt alone. There were moments when I had nobody to talk to and no one who truly understood the challenges I was facing. I had dreams of helping women in my community, but I lacked confidence and doubted whether I could make a difference.

Everything began to change when I met Jill and Karen, both members of the World Pulse community who live in Spain and The Philippines respectively. Although we had never met in persons, they became the most important mentors in my life through our conversations on World Pulse, Jill and Karen listened, encouraged, and helped me see possibilities where I saw only obstacles.

At a time when I was surrounded by discouraging voices, Jill and Karen gave me advice that I will never forget. They told me not to mind what anyone said about my dreams, not even family members who doubted me. Jill especially encouraged me to trust my vision, believe in my abilities, and keep moving forward despite criticism and negativity.

Those words came at a critical moment in my life. For a long time, I had allowed other people's opinions to define what I thought was possible. I worried about failure, what others would say, I worried that I was not capable enough to lead or create change. Jill helped me understand that if I wanted to make a difference, I could not allow fear or criticism to control my decisions.

I chose to follow her advice step by step and I began turning my vision into reality. I started working more actively within my community and after a few years, I eventually began the process of registering an organization focused on empowering women economically and raising funds to keep children especially girls in school. My goal is to help women create sustainable sources of income so they can provide for their families and ensure that their children remain in school.

The impact has already begun to spread beyond my own life as today, I mentor young girls and teenage mothers, many of whom face challenges similar to those I once faced. I encourage them to value themselves, pursue their goals and refuse to let difficult circumstances determine their future. When they tell me about their fears and doubts, I recognize my younger self in their stories. A number of times, I find myself sharing the same line and lesson that Jill and Karen shared with me, “do not let other people's opinions stop you from pursuing your purpose”

The thing which makes mentorship so powerful is that its impact does not end with one person since a mentor's encouragement can go a long way to create a chain reaction that touches many lives. These amazing women believed in me when I struggled to believe in myself which gave me the courage to act. Because I acted, I am now supporting women, girls, and teenage mothers in my community and through them, even more lives are being transformed.

Jill and Karen may live thousands of kilometers away in Spain and The Philippines, but their influence is deeply rooted in Northern Uganda. They changed my path not by giving me money or solving all my problems, but by helping me discover the strength and confidence that were already within me. For that, I will always be grateful.

Their mentorships remind me that sometimes a few words of encouragement can change the direction of a life and through that life, the future of an entire community.
