What Is Your Next Move? Lessons from B Lab Africa Program

Connections

One of the things I enjoy most about attending industry events is not just listening to great speakers but asking questions that stretch my thinking.
This week, I had the privilege of attending Doing Business Better: Building Nigeria's Next Generation of Responsible Businesses, organised by B Lab Africa.
The conversations challenged many of the assumptions we make about what makes a business successful. It became clear that business success is not measured by revenue or size alone. It is reflected in the decisions we make every day, the systems we build, the trust we earn and the impact we create.
Some lessons I am taking away include:
a. Focus on data. Do not wait for perfect conditions before measuring what matters.
b. Documentation is not just administrative work. It is the foundation of good governance and informed decision-making.
c. Understand how your customers, investors and stakeholders experience your products and services because perception shapes trust.
d. Build businesses that are resilient, inclusive and prepared for the future.
e. Value is not static. Organisations must continuously evolve to remain relevant.
f. Always ask yourself, what is the next move?
During the discussion, I had the opportunity to ask about the journey beyond becoming B Corp Certified. I needed to know what the next level of commitment looks like after certification and what happens when a business that has achieved B Corp status eventually closes its doors.
The responses reminded me that B Corp certification is far more than an achievement to celebrate. It represents an ongoing commitment to continuous improvement, accountability, transparency and creating lasting value for all stakeholders.
