The Family I Longed For
People often say, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
For a long time, I believed that.
But as I look back on my life, I have come to understand something different.
Sometimes, what truly makes us stronger... is each other.
I often wonder what my life would have looked like if my parents had been there to walk beside me. Perhaps I would have learned what safety felt like. Perhaps I would have understood the comfort of knowing that no matter how difficult life became, there would always be someone waiting to remind me that I belonged.
Instead, I grew up searching for that sense of belonging.
There were days when I felt invisible. Days when I questioned my worth. Days when I carried burdens that no child should ever carry.
I do not write these words to seek sympathy.
I write them because millions of children know this feeling.
They know what it is like to watch other families celebrate together while wondering what their own lives might have been if circumstances had been different.
Sometimes I imagine family gatherings filled with laughter.
I imagine cousins who would have walked beside me, encouraging me when I wanted to give up, celebrating my victories, and reminding me that I was never alone.
Perhaps we would have been stronger together.
These thoughts are not about living in regret.
They are about recognising what every child deserves—a family or community that nurtures, protects, and believes in them.
Yet life also taught me another truth.
Family is not always defined by blood.
Along my journey, I met people who offered kindness when I expected rejection. I found mentors who spoke words of encouragement when I doubted myself. I encountered friends who reminded me that my past did not determine my future.
Piece by piece, they helped me rebuild what life had broken.
Today, when I hear the words "Stronger Together," I no longer think only of the family I lost.
I think of every hand that lifted me when I had fallen.
I think of every person who believed in me before I believed in myself.
I think of every opportunity that allowed me to rise again.
Our greatest strength is not found in pretending we do not need one another.
It is found in choosing to stand beside one another through life's darkest moments.
If my story teaches anything, let it be this:
No child should grow up believing they are alone.
No young person should have to fight every battle without support.
No human being should be made to believe that asking for help is weakness.
We become stronger when we choose compassion over judgment, unity over division, and hope over despair.
My past reminds me of what I missed.
My future reminds me of what I can build.
And today, I choose to become part of the strength that someone else is still searching for.
Because being stronger together is not only about the family we are born into.
It is about the family we create through love, kindness, courage, and hope.
