The Arise Centre: A Hub for Learning, Growth, and Opportunity

At Power for the People, sustainability is not a separate programme. It is woven into everything we do.

Since its establishment, the Arise Centre for Excellence in Mbita, Kenya, has been creating opportunities for women and young people through vocational skills training, entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and livelihoods development. Graduates have gone on to secure employment, start businesses, and contribute to their communities, demonstrating the power of skills-based education to create lasting change.

But our vision extends beyond livelihoods alone.

As communities across East Africa face increasing environmental challenges, from climate change and resource scarcity to waste pollution, we believe vocational education must prepare learners not only for work, but also for responsible stewardship of the environment.

That is why waste management is integrated into every course at the Arise Centre.

Rather than being taught as a stand-alone topic, environmental sustainability is embedded directly into each vocational pathway, helping students understand how responsible waste management relates to their future careers and daily lives.

In Beauty Therapy, students learn the safe handling and disposal of chemicals, packaging, and other materials commonly used in the industry. Food and Beverage trainees explore energy-efficient cooking methods, composting, and responsible kitchen waste management. Fashion Design students are encouraged to minimise waste by creatively repurposing fabric offcuts and reducing material consumption. Plumbing students learn practical water conservation techniques, including rainwater harvesting systems and the installation and maintenance of water-saving fixtures.

Most importantly, these lessons are not confined to the classroom.

Students apply what they learn through hands-on activities and real-world practice, ensuring that sustainability becomes a habit rather than simply a concept. The result is a generation of graduates equipped with both technical expertise and an understanding of how their work can positively impact the environment.

One such graduate is Calvince, who completed the Water Engineering programme at the Arise Centre and now applies sustainable water installation practices in his work. His journey reflects the wider goal of the Centre: equipping learners with practical skills that improve livelihoods while contributing to more resilient and sustainable communities.

This approach builds upon the broader impact the Arise Centre continues to achieve. Through vocational training, livelihoods support, environmental conservation initiatives, and inclusive development programmes, women and young people are gaining the confidence, skills, and opportunities needed to shape their own futures. Graduates are finding employment, launching enterprises, and becoming active contributors to their communities.

For us, waste management is not a new initiative. It is part of an ongoing commitment to ensuring that sustainability is embedded across everything we teach and do.

Because true development is not only about creating jobs or generating income. It is also about ensuring that future generations inherit communities that are healthier, more resilient, and better equipped to protect the resources on which they depend.

At the Arise Centre, sustainability is not an add-on.

It is part of every lesson, every skill, and every opportunity we create.

And through that approach, we are helping build a future where economic growth and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.

This version combines the ongoing impact of the Arise Centre with the waste management component, making it clear that sustainability has always been part of the Centre's broader mission rather than a newly launched activity.
