The Hyena’s Lesson: Finding Strength in Small Wins

Life has a way of testing our strength in ways we don’t always expect. For me, one of the most profound lessons came not from books or mentors, but from observing nature. The hyena.

You see, the hyena isn’t always the first to the feast. It doesn’t always get the lion’s share or the glamorous hunt. But it survives—sometimes on scraps, sometimes on leftovers, sometimes on what others would dismiss. And yet, survival itself is its victory.

That image taught me something powerful: dignity in survival is not about how much you have, but how wisely you use what falls into your hands. In my own journey, there have been times when I only had fragments of opportunities, half chances, or doors that opened just enough for me to squeeze through. Those moments didn’t look like much to anyone else, but they became the fuel for my next step forward.

Too often, we dismiss small wins. We scroll through LinkedIn and see others landing big promotions, scaling companies, or posting highlight reels of success. It’s easy to feel like our progress is too slow, too small, or even invisible. But here’s the truth: the liver from a fallen chance, just like for the hyena, might be the very thing that sustains you for tomorrow’s breakthrough.

This ties deeply into mental health for our generation. We live in a culture of instant comparison and perfection. But resilience is built not from grand victories, but from the quiet courage to keep moving, even when the rewards seem small. Celebrating those humble gains keeps our mental wellbeing steady and helps us avoid the trap of burnout, self-doubt, or feeling "less than."

So, my mates, don’t despise your small steps. Don’t belittle your hidden progress. Whether it’s sending one job application after rejections, saving a little from your paycheck, finishing that online course, or simply showing up on a tough day—you are building resilience. You are becoming unshakable.

Remember, sometimes the smallest win today is the seed of your biggest triumph tomorrow. The path will open as long as you keep going.
