Lessons from the Hippopotamus

We’ve all been sold the idea that eating salads, walking a bit, and doing all the “right” things will magically transform our bodies, our careers, or our mental state. But life, like the hippopotamus, teaches us differently.

Hippos are fascinating creatures. They appear calm, almost sluggish on the surface, yet they carry immense power beneath the water. They’re not trying to impress anyone, they simply survive, thrive, and defend what’s theirs. And here’s the lesson: change doesn’t always look like hustle culture or extreme sacrifice. Sometimes, transformation is about consistency, self-awareness, and respecting your own pace.

In my own life, I’ve chased quick fixes—instant results in health, career, and personal growth. I’ve dieted, overworked, and tried to “walk” my way to success. The truth? That approach burned me out, amplified stress, and left me questioning my own worth. The mental load of constantly trying to be more, faster, better, is exhausting, and it’s something many of us millennials silently carry.

What the hippopotamus teaches me is this: resilience is quiet, steady, and often unseen. Growth doesn’t always require dramatic moves—it requires showing up, protecting your energy, and being strategic. You can set boundaries, nourish your mind, and move toward your goals without sacrificing your mental well-being. Your “green salad” efforts are good, but they must be paired with self-compassion, rest, and a recognition of your own strength.

So next time you feel like you’re not doing enough, remember the hippo: immense power doesn’t need to be flashy. Real strength comes from within, from knowing when to act, when to rest, and when to just float and observe your environment. It’s about balance, inner calm, and resilience—the same things that safeguard our mental health as we navigate life’s pressures.

Take a breath. Trust the process. You’re stronger than you think, and your pace is your power.
