Connections

Power for the People is a community-driven organisation that empowers communities to shape their own development through sustainable, locally led solutions. Founded in 2015, we set out to spark sustainable development and strengthen self-sufficiency in communities facing deep and complex challenges.
Today, we work alongside communities across East Africa, partnering with local leaders, schools, community groups, and organisations in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. From the shores of Lake Victoria and the pastoralist plains of southern Kenya to the recovering communities of northern Uganda and the Maasai villages of northern Tanzania, our programmes focus on improving access to healthcare, education, clean water, livelihoods, and economic opportunity.
We believe sustainable change happens when communities are empowered to lead their own development, supported through partnership, knowledge sharing, and long-term investment.
We work by listening first, then partnering with communities to identify priority needs and co-design practical solutions that people can own, sustain, and grow over time. Rather than imposing external approaches, we focus on strengthening local leadership, building long-term partnerships, and amplifying community-led action that creates lasting change.
Our approach is rooted in collaboration, accountability, and sustainability as we continue to strengthen resilience, create opportunity, and empower communities, one handshake at a time.
We joined World Pulse because it brings together a global community of changemakers who share a commitment to creating a more just, equitable, and sustainable world. The platform provides an opportunity to connect, learn, collaborate, and amplify stories of community-led development from East Africa.
Through World Pulse, we hope to share the lessons, successes, and challenges from our work, while also learning from the experiences of others working to strengthen communities around the world. We believe that when knowledge, ideas, and experiences are shared, local solutions can inspire global change.
Most importantly, we joined World Pulse to build meaningful connections, celebrate community resilience, and contribute to conversations that advance sustainable development and social transformation.
Where we Work and What This Looks Like in Practice
Across the shores of Lake Victoria in Mbita, Kenya, where high HIV prevalence, unemployment, and environmental degradation continue to challenge families, the ARISE Centre for Excellence has become a beacon of possibility. Established in 2022, the centre now serves as a thriving hub for vocational skills, digital literacy, climate-smart agriculture, entrepreneurship, and community development. Women and young people who once faced limited opportunities are gaining practical skills, launching enterprises, and building sustainable futures through a model designed to reinvest success back into the community itself.

Further into Lake Victoria lies Remba Island, a place of resilience and contradiction. Home to thousands of fisherfolk, the island has long struggled with poverty, poor sanitation, limited education, and the harmful cycle of "sex-for-fish" exploitation that affects many women. Together with local partners, we have worked to transform access to opportunity. Today, more than 10,000 residents have access to clean drinking water. New classrooms have expanded learning opportunities for children. Digital literacy programmes are opening doors to the wider world. Menstrual health initiatives are helping girls stay in school, while community-led enterprises are creating alternative sources of income and dignity.
In Osupukiai, a remote Maasai community in southern Kenya, water scarcity has shaped daily life for generations. Droughts, climate change, and limited infrastructure placed enormous pressure on families and livestock. Through a community-owned solarised borehole project, more than 520 households now have reliable access to clean water. Children spend more time learning and less time collecting water. Women have more time to participate in economic activities. Schools have access to water, digital learning resources, and improved educational facilities. Women's groups are building enterprises in beekeeping, agriculture, ghee production, and beadwork, creating new pathways toward financial independence.

In Endebess, Kenya, often called part of the country's breadbasket, we encountered a different reality. Surrounded by fertile land and agricultural abundance, many families still experience poverty and exclusion. Here, our work has focused on bringing people together. Community forums have united hundreds of residents, educators, leaders, faith groups, women, youth, and people living with disabilities around a shared vision for development. By strengthening local participation and educational leadership, we are helping build foundations that will support sustainable progress for years to come.

Across the border in Agago District, northern Uganda, decades of conflict left deep scars on families and communities. Yet hope is taking root once again. Through our partnership with Agago Children and Community Initiatives (ACCI), schools are growing stronger, children are receiving better nutrition, farmers are learning sustainable agricultural practices, and community groups are building savings and livelihood opportunities. Fields that once symbolised hardship are now producing cassava, vegetables, poultry, and fish that feed families while generating income. Education, health, and enterprise are working together to create lasting resilience.

And in Longido District, northern Tanzania, where women often walk up to twenty kilometres in search of unsafe water, a new chapter is beginning. Working alongside Mulika Afrika and local communities, we are co-designing programmes that support women's economic empowerment, maternal health, community health education, and future water security solutions. Every conversation with village leaders, health workers, and women's groups is helping shape a programme owned by the community itself.
Although these communities are separated by lakes, borders, cultures, and landscapes, they share something powerful in common.
They possess the determination, knowledge, and potential to shape their own future.
Together, we are building.
Building schools where there were none.
Building businesses where opportunities were scarce.
Building resilience in the face of climate change.
Building healthier futures for women, children, and families.
Building communities that can thrive long after external support has ended.
And this is only the beginning.
Stay tuned as we document the newest initiatives, partnerships, innovations, and community-led transformations currently unfolding across East Africa.
We look forward to sharing our initiatives, stories, challenges, and successes as we continue working alongside communities to create lasting and sustainable change.
